Privacy Policy

The CitizenWeb Project’s highest priority is the privacy of its users, no matter who is visiting the site or using its resources. We follow the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)’s noted best practices for privacy and web browsing anonymity.

  • We do not collect or store any personally-identifiable information on our visitors. Our analytics system is configured to anonymize its logs, which removes IP addresses before they can be recorded. HOWEVER: If you intentionally provide us with any personally-identifiable information in any manner aside from normal reading or page interaction (such as using your real name or a known alias in a forum handle or blog post) this data will be stored on our server just like any other data. None of the information we keep on our users will be sold, traded or otherwise provided to any third-party except to comply with valid legal requests from German authorities.
  • We do not track our users with personally identifiable information, but we do use a simple and non-invasive analytics system called Piwik. Piwik is a locally-hosted analytics solution that can give us basic site usage information. It has been recommended by members of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) as a safe and privacy-conscious alternative to Google Analytics. We have configured our Piwik setup to be completely anonymous and to not gather any tracking data on our site’s users. None of the anonymous information collected by us via Piwik will ever be given to any third-party outside of The CitizenWeb Project. Furthermore, Piwik respects the “Do Not Track” feature of most browsers. Even though we do not keep any sort of personally-identifiable information on our users, we still give them the ability to opt out of the anonymous analytics by checking the “Do Not Track” option in their web browser of choice.
  • We do not include active scripts from third-parties that would allow them to track your movements on our site. This includes networking sites like Facebook or Twitter. Any links to such sites would be made without dynamic scripting that tracks users.
  • Unless mutually agreed upon, the data you give us will remain under your exclusive ownership. This means that, outside of a specific arrangement, you can request that any data you provide to us be modified, deleted or exported to you in a downloadable format. None of the data we store will be sold, traded or otherwise provided to any third-party except to comply with valid legal requests from German authorities.

External Sites and Services

Any sites outside of our domain ( that we may link to have their own privacy policies, and we have no responsibility for their content or activities once you follow these links. However we will try our best to not link to any site that has particularly atrocious privacy policies, or to adequately warn you beforehand.

We accept donations via Bitcoin or PayPal. PayPal is a US corporation that has its own privacy and site policies. PayPal’s User Agreement and Privacy Policy are different from those of this site. When you click the “Donate via PayPal” link, you are subject to PayPal’s policies, and we cannot be held responsible for the policies they implement.

Your use of our site indicates acceptance of the above conditions. But we don’t think they will be too difficult to agree to!
